During a period of mania, sufferers experience behavioural changes such as speed talking and having fleeting thoughts and ideas. They have little sleep and become easily distracted and fidgety. In addition, an impractical confidence in their capabilities will set in and there will be increasing attempts to engage in ambitious or high-risk activities (e.g. taking on new projects or impetuous living)
During a period of depression, sufferers often feel edgy and weary, resulting in difficulty focussing, recalling, and making decisions. Eating, sleeping, or other habits undergo drastic changes and there may even be suicidal thoughts or behaviour.
During a mixed state, symptoms often include agitation, insomnia, major changes in appetite, and suicidal thinking.
